What are Water Wells
Put simply, water wells are devices or systems used to draw water from thr ground to the surface for human use. When it rains, water trickles down through soil and then gets trapped in solid rock. this water is usually very pure and clean after being filtered by sand and stone, leaving fresh water. This usually happens at least fifty feet below the ground, and often much deeper than that. In order to access this highly desireable water, people for centuries have used various kinds of water wells.
Why Use Water Wells?
Ground water is almost always pure, clean, and delicious. It often adopts a distinct and delicious flavor from the minerals it dissolves, which can also provide an added health benefit. Those that can access it can get it for free after the cost of their water wells, making it a great resource for those who use a lot of it, such as farmers and pool owners. Water wells are a constant source hat won’t be interrupted if the power goes out or the water main breaks.
Open Water Wells
This is the simplest and oldest kind of well. It’s basically just a hole in the ground dug deep enough to reach the groundwater. This is often what comes to mind when people think of wells, as it has been somewhat glorified in culture as a sign of quaintness and older times. Once the well is dug, the water can be access several ways. However, the classic method involves simply tying a bucket to a rope and lowering it down to the water. As this method is tedious, these kinds of water wells are typically ignored for modern ones. However, it is still common in much of the undeveloped world.
Aquifer Water Wells
When water is stored underground for long periods, it often gets under great pressure from the push of rock and more water pushing down on it. A collection of water under these conditions is called an aquifer. When tapped in to, aquifer water will push itself through any opening provided. A natural example of this is the occurrence of springs, where water is pushed out fo the ground by pressure. Humans can also use this force to their advantage. By breaking into the aquifer, the water will naturally rise through its opening, removing the need for the bucket and rope method.
Mechanical Pump Water Wells
This kind of well uses mechanical energy to draw water out of the ground. It usually requires manual pumping of a lever or other device by a human to operate. However, it can also be powered by other sources, such as a windmill. Newer pumps operate on electricity provided by a generator, batteries, or power outlet.
